For us to understand erectile dysfunctions and erection problems, we should first have a look at what constitutes a properly functioning penis and what exactly happens when an erection occurs.

An erection appears when there is a sensory or a mental stimulus of some kind, or both of these.

An impulse which comes from the brain and the surrounding nerves makes the muscles from the Corpora Cavernosa to relax and to expand. This way, blood flows in from the veins and fills the space which has been made.

The penis is made up of two chambers, called the Corpora Cavernosa. These two chambers run the length of the penis shaft. A spongy tissue fills these two chambers.

The chambers are also surrounded by a soft membrane, which is called the tunica albuginea. The spongy tissue of the tunica is made up of smooth muscles, tissues, air space, arteries, and veins.

The urine and the ejaculate are channeled through the urethra. The urethra runs along the underside of the Corpora Cavernosa and it is surrounded by the same spongy tissue as the tunica.

The extra blood which enters the penis produces pressure within the expandable chamber of the Corpora Cavernosa, causing the expansion of the penis. When the tunica albuginea has a proper function, it helps trapping the blood inside the Corpora Cavernosa, allowing you to sustain your erection.

When the muscles in the penis contract to stop the inflow of blood and to open the outflow channels, the blood leaves the penis, leaving it flaccid again.
